1910  The Castillo is a hot-hued flower. The whites call it "Indian's Paint Brush," but the Indians call it "Bloody Nose."
1938  (1950)  Scarlet columbine and red and orange Indian paintbrush cover the open places.
1959  There is no finer feature of the autumn landscape in Alberta . . . than the roadside aster, goldenrod, blue lupins, brown-eyed susan, Indian paint brush and wild geranium.
